The summer of 2010 I was asked by the UNC William B. Aycock Family Medicine Center if I would paint a mural for their waiting room.
The staff there was amazing, especially since they had to reroute their patients while I was painting around one of the four main doors and I got paint on the carpet several times. I learned a lot about chemical stain removers. And one of the doctors had to teach me about Finding Nemo and all the important characters I had to include.
But I most enjoyed the children. There was one boy who loved fish and got very excited when he learned that dolphins are ‘big fish’. Another girl came up to me and told me all about how she loved painting and now that she thought about it, she would also like to paint on the walls with me [cue my frantic worry as I tried to keep her away from the paint]. Others kept me company and showed me pictures of their pet fish ‘Dory’ and ‘Nemo’ and every other picture they had on their camera. They were truly wonderful.
The mural was covered in the following locations: UNC Gazette, The Daily Tarheel, and the Carrboro Citizen.
Below you can see a timeline of how the mural progressed day by day. It was painted over the course of a month.
